Sayyed Darwish: The Father of Modern Egyptian Music
His Life. His Songs, and the Egypt That Shaped Him
with Debbie Smith
Who was Sayyed Darwish? He may be the most influential Egyptian composer that most dancers have never heard of. Often referred to as the “Father of Modern Egyptian Music,” his impact on modern Egyptian music and song was outsized considering the short span of his life, and the melodies he created continue to reverberate even today in Egyptian popular consciousness. Sayyed Darwish is foundational to modern Egyptian musical identity, and he occupies an important place in Egypt’s musical and cultural memory.
Born in Alexandria in 1892, just a few years after the British occupation of Egypt, his work as a composer and singer took place against the backdrop of major political and social changes in early 20th century Egypt, and this shaped both the subject matter of his songs as well as his musical approach.
In this workshop we will look at the role Sayyed Darwish played in developing modern Egyptian song and musical theater, including his use of colloquial language, incorporation of everyday social themes, and popularizing new song forms. His work will be examined in light of the political and social context of Egypt in this time, from the time of British occupation and the growing nationalist movement, to the 1919 revolution, and the beginnings of nation-building.
In addition to looking at his work and the context he emerged from, we will take a closer look at several of his best known songs to get a greater understanding of how they expressed the concerns of the everyday Egyptian and the working class.
